A modern masterpiece (2003) by British playwright Martin McDonagh, known even better for his cinematic ventures (In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths). McDonagh, with his dark and razor-sharp humor, wrote a play that juggles opposing genres. The Pillowman tells of "a writer thrown into prison in a totalitarian state and interrogated about the connection between the plots of his stories and the murders of children taking place in his city," as the interrogated writer himself testifies within the play. It is a violent, dark play dealing with a terrifying subject — the murder of children. And yet it is also a witty, poetic work, satirical and enchanting, blending, like a classic children's fairy tale, terror and wonder. That dark, sharp, cynical and enchanted magic is what we tried to capture and bring to the stage.
